Clip theft...again. *sighs*

First I want to acknowledge that many of my posts tend to be bitch-fests of late, and I apologize. When I'm tired I can't summon the energy to post happy thoughts. When I'm tired and pissed off, I have all the energy in the world. I will try to spread more sunshine throughout my posts. Not in this post, but maybe in my next.

The topic again is clip theft. The details are long so they're behind a cut ...

So, this was brought to my attention on the Kawoosh! forum by Brihana25. A *coughs* vidder on youtube is stealing clips left and right and has even posted two stolen videos and claimed them as his own. After watching several horribly pieced together videos I found stolen clips from four vidders including myself. Not only did this person steal clips from my 'Intergalactic' video, he had also posted the entire vid on his site, claiming it was his. He also claimed Melanie's 'Goofy Moments' vid and stole a large portion of EKR's 'A Good Fight' vid for his own version of the same vid which he also added scenes from 'Intergalactic' to.

After discovering all of this, I was reasonably upset. I commented on every video page where I noticed clip theft. This is the message that he sent me after removing 'Intergalactic' from his page and deleting all my comments.

"r u like stupid do u want to stop ppl from making videos... everyone who makes videos takes 1-2 clips from other ppl's videos they always most likely say u can on most sites..... yes i went a little too far taking your "intergalactic" and have taken this off my youtube video list. the video i have linked is "MY" creation from dvd's and downloaded episodes.. so back off"

Seriously?

I mean, seriously?

This is the message I sent him afterwards. I have not yet recieved a response.

"Do you even understand why people who have their clips stolen get mad? Do you understand the time, money and effort that go into an honestly made video? I really don't think that you do or you wouldn't respond with such an asinine message. The program I use to edit my videos cost $100. The effects cost money to unlock so that I can use them. I paid for the dvd ripper, I paid for the dvd's, I paid for the avi to mpeg convertor. I spend a crap load of time choosing the music, selecting the scenes fiddling with the timing, experimenting with effects and then I have a few people beta it to let me know what is off and then I go through the whole process again working with their suggestions. This is all done before I post anything and then I sit back and wait for feedback that doesn't always come.

All *real* vidders do this. Nobody that I associate with online steals clips nor do they find it acceptable. There are, in fact, several sites dedicated to tracking down clip theives and crushing them. Also, sites that will direct you to honest downloads with instructions on how to do it yourself. What you do is not video editing. You take the hard, expensive work of others then cut and paste it into a nonsensical timeline and call it a job well done. You take credit for entire videos that are not yours. That is not 'a little too far' it is reprehensible, lazy and self-fulfilling. I notice that you pimp your vids hard which tells me that you're in it for praise, not for the creation aspect of sharing your views with others.

All in all, the impression I recieved from viewing your page is that you are a deceitful, arrogant child with no knowledge of true accomplishment. I know that brihana25 was trying to help you become an honest vidder but that you blew her off. I wonder if you understand what it is you're missing out on by seperating yourself from the vidding community. Because you are not a member. If you were you would know that there are many people out there willing to help you learn and grow and create fabulous videos of your own creation. Something you can post and actually feel proud about. I don't understand how you can feel satisfaction recieving praise for a sequence or title overlay that you didn't create.

You obviously think you are the center of the universe and all eyes should be on you....well, they are going to be. Youtube isn't the be all and end all of the web. You are about to become very popular. I hope you're ready for it."

Yeah, I know. A little over-dramatic at the end, but I was so fired up! My thoughts are that if he wants attention, then we should all give it to him. Write comments as fast as he can delete them. Fill his message box with reasons why clip theft is wrong. Make him understand that it is not tolerated. That it is not acceptable. Make him take all videos containing stolen clips down. Demand it. We are a powerful community when we combine our efforts. Hell, tv shows have been saved, canceled shows have become movies. We have a loud voice and I think we need to use it to stop this kind of immature activity.

When clip theft is praised and thought of as honest vidding, it demeans the community and the original vidder who actually put in the effort to create something special.

Also, there are a two websites dealing with clip theft that I would like to mention.

Video Elite-Fade to black ~Their mission statement: "We are the vidding community and we are tired of having our hard-earned video clips ripped off only to have the thieves claim ignorance. We want to have a place where all vidders, experienced and novice, can come to find information and tips on the video theft problem as well as a place to educate the new vidder with information and resources so they won't feel the need to just "take" from others."

Anti-Clip Theft Union~ Statement from site: "I for one, am sick of having beautifully edited music videos dissected and having their clips used for other videos with out the original vidders permission. Though vidders do not own the clips in their videos, nor should they claim to, the result of their editing skills created their own mini tribute to the rightful owners of the contents work."

Comments

I go by "jemo" on the Kawoosh! forums and I got to your LJ from there. I totally love the flame you sent him, and I even left him a little comment and flagged his video "Final Days". I just checked the page again, and wouldn't you know it? He deleted my comment. ;) Oh, well. Here's hoping that the combined effort of the "loud voice" of the vidding community will get our point through his thick skull. ^_^

Thanks for responding to this. Want to know something funny about all of this? Good. :) I found that Resurection0 stole a video from beakerbait (another person accused of hosting stolen material) and reported this to beakerbait. He then, deleted my comment with the information, then commented himself that *he* found the stolen video and was pissed off someone would rip him off. LMAO-He stole my comment! People are deranged.
Heeeeeeeeeeeee! That's pretty deranged, alright. But, dang! beakerbait? That sucks. He's got some stories on FF.net that I really liked. Well, unless he stole those too. ^_^
As far as I know, the only thing beakerbait has stolen was my comment. He hosts Evil_Supermans videos and those housed stolen clips. I've also heard that Evil_Superman has stolen fanfiction. This I cannot confirm but it comes from a reliable source.
